Monthly Challenge: Self-love

Each month I love to pick a challenge of some kind to try every day for that month. Sometimes these are growth exercises, sometimes they’re trying to instill a habit, and other times it just sounds fun to try! Here’s a few of the challenges I’ve done recently:

  • Spend 5 minutes each day sitting in nature.
  • Eat Paleo for an entire month.
  • Write one thing I want to be know for as a father/husband
  • Daily pushups challenge

Recently I’ve been challenged by several people to find healthy ways to love myself. This seemed like such a strange idea when I started hearing it. Brett Trapp put it well:

Self-love? Sounds an awful lot like selfishness, self-absorption, and narcissism. After all, we’re called to love God, not ourselves. Self-love is for the liberals and the hippies.

And I’d always agreed with that. 100%.

I’ve just always felt that loving myself was a waste of time and a selfish way of living. However, I’m continually reading about vulnerability and healthy relationships and the theme of self-love kept coming up. So I decided to give it a try.

In October my challenge was simple. Pick one healthy way to love myself the next day…and then do it!

Here are a few of my favorite things I did:

  • Go for a walk.
  • Read a chapter of a book I like.
  • Make myself a good dinner.
  • Tak a nap!
  • Play around with a fun creative project on Photoshop.
  • Eat Chick-fil-A for lunch.
  • Buy a good cup of coffee from a new coffee shop.

(There’s a recurring theme of food involved in this challenge.)

This has been one of my favorite challenges I’ve done. By writing these ideas down I have created a list of how to invest in myself in healthy ways. I found the key to executing this challenge was to pick something specific, for the next day, and put it on my calendar so I would actually do it.
